Boyer’s Coffee Company
I don’t know about you, but when I think of coffee, the state of Colorado is the last thing that comes to mind. However, there is one establishment here that has made a big name for itself in the world of coffee production. Almost fifty years ago, with just $1,800 in his pocket, Bill Boyer started his own Office Coffee Service, delivering coffee and machines to local Denver businesses. A few years later, he decided that his products needed to be improved, and began experimenting with different coffee-roasting methods. He quickly discovered that Colorado’s arid climate and high elevation caused the beans to have a uniquely bold flavor, much better than the coffee he was buying from other companies. After a lot more practice, Boyer felt that he had created the most perfect roasted coffee. The key to the rich, distinct taste of Boyer’s coffee is that it must be roasted very slowly in small batches. I guarantee that when you drink a cup of this joe, you will be able to taste the love and patience that went into making it.
A few years after reinventing his Office Coffee Service, Boyer bought an old schoolhouse to expand the business and renamed it Boyer’s Coffee Company. When it comes to coffee, you can expect nothing but the best from this company. Except for the Arabica beans, Boyer’s coffee is one-hundred percent local. Their beans are imported from the best coffee farms in the world. Thanks to online shopping, people all over America and surrounding islands can appreciate Boyer’s coffee.
Even though you will find Boyer’s coffee at chain supermarkets throughout Colorado, the old Denver schoolhouse on North Washington Street remains the only Boyer’s Coffee Company in the world. Today, the schoolhouse contains offices, a warehouse, roasterie, packaging facility, and the one-of-a-kind Boyer’s coffee shop. The entire building covers a little over two acres of area. From Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 4:00 pm, and Saturday 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, you can walk in and indulge in a wide variety of delicious fresh brews, scrumptious, warm pastries, free Wi-Fi, and friendly, personalized service. The conference room can be rented for business meetings or fun get-togethers. Be prepared to spend at least $4 for one cup of flavored coffee or tea. While it is a bit pricey, (about $17 for twelve ounces in stores), Boyer’s is so uniquely delightful that is worth every penny, especially if you are a picky person. The good news is you can get over twice as much coffee (two pounds) for just $15 when you purchase online, and they offer free shipping on orders over $100!
Before its recent reopening, the schoolhouse was remodeled using refurbished building materials taken from other historical structures in Denver. The light walnut wood panels used to accent the coffee bar came from the Guarantee National Bank of Denver. The schoolhouse has a classy design but its atmosphere is very personal and cozy. You can’t help but notice their state-of-the-art coffee-making equipment, or that every surface is shining and immaculate. School children used to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic on the blackboard that is now used to display the daily specials. Little facts like that, along with names like DenverBlend, Bolder Boulder Blend, and Colorado Café Blend, are what really make a person feel special when they visit Boyer’s Coffee Company. No matter what kind of coffee you prefer, Boyer’s has a blend for you. Some of the regular blends include: Breakfast, Espresso, Italian, and French; and there are flavored blends like Swiss Mocha Almond, French Vanilla, and Irish Crème. Most blends are also available in decaf. Venezuelan Maracaibo, Colombian Excelso, and Pastores Guatemalan Antigua are some of the more exotic Boyer’s blends. My favorite is the Kona—a flowery, rich, dark, Hawaiian blend, that smells almost as good as it tastes. Every sip tastes so wonderful that drinking it has become my new guilty pleasure.
All that guilt goes away when I think about what Boyer’s does for their community and environment. One of their main focuses is to reduce their carbon footprint to zero by the year 2021. They support domestic companies by using only American-made, recyclable packaging materials. Also, Boyer’s holds fundraisers for local causes and sponsors events such as the Walk to Defeat ALS, and they sincerely ask the public to “Let us know of local events where we can be of additional service.” Boyer’s Coffee Company has always been a family-owned business, completely dedicated to every one of their projects, products, and services. So go ahead and treat yourself to some of the best coffee around. You won’t feel selfish or wasteful, I promise.
